What a year this has been! We celebrated our 15th anniversary, awarded an additional $160K in grants to young adults, and continued to share our data and stories with news outlets such as the New York Times and CURE Magazine. Perhaps most importantly, we started to turn our attention to using what we know to effect change on a much larger level.
Your support over our first 15 years has put The Samfund in position to change more lives than ever before. With legislation in the works to provide student loan deferment to those going through active cancer treatment, and new collaborations forming with local and global organizations, we are hopeful that our efforts going forward will impact young adult survivors on a much larger scale.
We are proud to share this annual report with you, our friends, donors, and supporters. As you read about this year's milestones and accomplishments, please know how grateful we are to you, for helping to make them all possible.

Letter From The Chairman
Dear Samfund supporters,
This year we were fortunate to celebrate our 15th anniversary, and I was deeply honored to receive The Samfund Humanitarian Award at the event in May. Even as we award our two millionth grant dollar, we know there is so
much more work still to do. We’ll be building on what we’ve accomplished and learned in these past 15 years to create bigger change going forward, just as the alumni highlighted below have done by pursuing their dreams and impacting their communities.

On May 22, we hosted our 15th anniversary event at City Winery in New York City. Throughout the course of this amazing night we heard from Samfund alums Jen and Michelle about how they were able to move forward after cancer because of the support and family they found in The Samfund community. Lt. Gen. Dick Newton presented Steven Bandrowczak, our Board Chair, with The Samfund Humanitarian Award. Steven talked about the importance of giving back, and also the fact that our work is not yet done. Honorary Event Chair Michael Strahan spoke from the heart about why he has been part of The Samfund since the very beginning. Event Co-Chair Lex Friedman encouraged everyone to "give until it hurts," and our CEO and Founder Samantha Watson shared some of the greatest moments of The Samfund's first 15 years, while thanking everyone for bringing us closer to our greatest moment yet: awarding our two millionth grant dollar.
We are so grateful to everyone who helped make this event possible: our chefs, Event Sponsors, Honorary Event Chairs Kenneth Cole and Michael Strahan, Event Co-Chairs Neil Cole and Lex Friedman, and our amazing Host Committee. 3rd Annual Casino Night

On October 26, 2017 we joined our Chicago Samfund family for our third annual Casino Night! Attendees enjoyed appetizers and drinks while trying their luck at our blackjack, craps, and roulette tables, where some amazing prizes were up for grabs. We always love connecting with our dedicated community in Chicago, and we are so grateful to everyone who attended or sponsored a ticket for a young adult survivor!
Team Samfund
This year, Team Samfund members ran almost 400 miles in support of our programs for young adult cancer survivors! Our runners participated in the the Los Angeles Marathon, the Falmouth Road Race, and the Chicago Marathon, raising a total of $111,824!

Grant Recipient Regional Breakdown
The Samfund awards grants to young adult survivors across the country, ensuring that everyone has resources available to them, no matter where they live.
Family Building
Some of our grants this year helped recipients start their families. Our Family Building Grants help cover the costs associated with IVF, surrogacy, and adoption. In the last 15 years, The Samfund has helped create over 20 families!

Partner Spotlight: Critical Mass
This year we worked with Critical Mass to expand our reach and support our young adult survivor community in new ways. Using our first hand knowledge of the financial toxicity faced by young adult survivors, we set out to guarantee student loan deferment to all those undergoing active cancer treatment. What started as a trip for two to Capitol Hill in 2017 expanded dramatically to include 65 advocates and young adult survivors at Young Adult Cancer Action Day on June 21, 2018. At Young Adult Cancer Action Day we appealed to lawmakers representing districts all over the country, urging them to extend to cancer patients the same model of student loan deferment offered to returning military personnel in the Service Members Civil Relief Act. The experiences we had on Young Adult Cancer Action Day are proof that when we all raise our voices and share our stories, we can make change happen. We know that student loan deferment is only one cause in a long list of legislative priorities for young adult cancer survivors, and we are hopeful that we will be able to advocate for the interests of our community in Washington D.C for many years to come!
